Mill ledger · what actually comes back
Bring the grain. Count the flour.
Grist Pad is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. At a grist mill, the miller keeps a share before you get your flour. Side income is the same: platform fees, payment charges, tools and tax all come out first. We look at how to measure what's left, and decide whether the trip to the mill is worth it.
The mill
The toll comes out before the flour does.
The number a client pays is the grain. Before any of it is yours, the platform takes its fee, the payment service takes a charge, tools and materials cost something, and part should be set aside for tax.
None of those scoops is large on its own. Together, in this made-up example, they take forty percent. Knowing your own toll early tells you whether a job is worth taking at the price offered.
Toll board
Where the miller's share comes from, by kind of side work.
Every kind of work has its own scoops. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country and platform to print honestly.
| Work | Platform share | Other costs | Easy to forget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance marketplaces | Often a large share | Payment withdrawal fees | Currency conversion |
| Selling used items | Listing and sale fees | Packaging, postage | Returns |
| Handmade goods | Shop and payment fees | Materials | Your time making samples |
| Delivery or driving | Varies by app | Fuel, maintenance | Insurance |
| Private tutoring | None, if direct | Travel or software | Unpaid cancellations |
Chaff
What else gets lost on the way.
- FEES
The rate isn't what arrives.
Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Small amounts still count.
Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- FATIGUE
Late nights add up.
Side work that eats into sleep comes back as mistakes at the day job. Protect your rest first.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Offers that cost you to start.
Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
